The Carers Association in Mayo invites those willing to raise awareness of issues affecting young carers to create and undertake their own particular challenge for sponsorship between now and May 3 through a Dare 2 Care challenge.

The Carers Association are urging Westmeath to recognise the work of their local carers by nominating them for The Carers of the Year Awards 2012. While Christmas is a holiday for many, the work of family carers is greatly increased this time of year as the majority of schools, day, and residential care centres are closed over the festive period.

The Carers of the Year Awards 2012 were launched recently by The Carers Association, whose members took the opportunity to highlight the physical, emotional, and psychological cost of caring for their loved ones in the home. There are 2,862 carers in Westmeath providing 66,262 hours of care in the home each week to frail older people, people with disabilities, terminally ill, and those with special needs.

The Carers Association and The Mayo Volunteer Centre are organising a day for carers entitled Appreciating Mayo’s Hidden Treasures: Family Carers. The day is organised for December 5 in Breaffy House Hotel from 11am to 3pm. This day happens is the International Day of the Volunteer.
